Malta’s capital is thronged with magnificent baroque architecture, evident in the city’s many churches and palaces. Valletta, founded by the Knights if St. John during the Middle Ages, has an exciting mix of the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The enormous walls that protect the city made it practically impregnable for several hundred years, and Valletta is an impressive sight for those who come from the sea. With its narrow alleys, cosy squares, ornamented churches and beautiful yards, its made four hours of pleasurable walking. Sir Walter Scott described Valetta as "a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen", and here you find both gay hotels and gay bars.
