Malta, which means ”safe harbour”, is a group of islands in the Mediterranean. Only the three largest islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, are inhabited. The scenery is dominated by rocky lowlands. Malta is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean and is a mix of different cultures and civilisations. The history of the country stretches many thousands of years back in time. The islands were for centuries centre of the Knights of St. John, and later became a part of the British Empire. Malta became independent in 1964. The warm winds from North Africa give a pleasant climate all year around, perfect islands for swimming and a quiet holiday.
