The Prague Spring is probably what we most associate with the Czech Republic, or Czechoslovakia as it was called when the population tried to rebel against the Soviet Communist oppression. On 1 January 1993, after the fall of Communism, the Czech Republic and Slovakia chose to part their ways and form two independent states.
The Czech Republic is one of the big tourism destinations in Europe. The many preserved historical locations around the country, let alone in Prague, attract Europeans and Americans alike. The country is one of the most liberal in east Europe. It was first in recognising same-sex relationships and the bigger cities, with Prague in the forefront, have a lively gay scene.
