The world's longest and narrowest country on a coastal strip between the Andes in the east and the Pacific Ocean in the west. Desert in the north but otherwise a very varying climate. After many years under Pinochet´s military dictatorship, it is since the 1990s a democracy. Since 2006 Chile has the country's first female president Michelle Bachelet. Chile has two Nobel Prize winners in litterature: Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda. The capital is Santiago de Chile and the national dance is called Cueca. Gay life is flourishing, primarily in the capital, and there is a desire to bring in legislation for same sex couples
