South Africa, or Rainbow Nation, is one of the worlds most gay-friendly countries. In 2006 gender-neutral marriage legislation was introduced and the rights of gay people are protected in the country's constitution. It was in connection with the huge upheaval from apartheid to a new democratic state that the LGBT issues were brought to the forefront.
