Serbia was created from various Slavic areas during the 5th and 6th centuries and finally, during the 7th century, was united under the orthodox church. The country lies near the Balkan Sea but lacks a coastline. The climate is warm and pleasant during the summers but cold in the winters. Many years of war and strife after Yugoslavia disintegrated obviously effected the country very hard. The gay community has had a hard time too, with strong opposition from the right wing nationalists as well as religious groups. In conjunction with hosting the Eurovision Song Contest, a few cracks have appeared and attitudes seem to be softening with a growing but nervous gay community and gay life centered around Belgrade, the capital.
