Turkey is situated in Europe, as well as Asia, and borders eight countries. It has a coastline by the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. The country is a secularised republic, but receiving continuous criticism because of how it handles the Kurdish minority, as well as its attitudes about freedom of press and expression.
The Turkish LGBT movement has faced problems trying to publish their own media as it is classed as “pornographic”. There are gay scenes in the larger cities and gradually the situation for LGBT people is improving.
Most foreigners come to Turkey as tourists, enjoying the beaches and/or to experience the historical monuments, from both Christian and Muslim cultures, as well as pre-historical times. Many also travel here to visit relatives so today there are several good and cheap options for travelling here.
