As a self-governing part of the USA, Puerto Rico is one of the more gay-friendly islands in the Caribbean. They had their first Gay Pride in 1991 and there is a good selection of gay bars and gay-friendly hotels. Before Columbus came in 1492, it had been inhabited for over 2,000 years. For a long time, the island was a Spanish colony but was invaded by American troops in the Spanish-American War of 1898, who took it over permanently. It is a popular destination for American tourists, due in no small part to the wonderful climate and beautiful beaches.
