Lebanon is situated in the Middle East by the eastern Mediterranean coast, and borders Syria and Palestine. Tho coastal strip has a long history, the are has often been a subordinate part of bigger empires. In 1975 there was a bloody civil war that lasted for 16 years. The relationship between Lebanon and Israel is still tense along the border. Before the war Lebanon was called the Switzerland of the Middle East. The country has an unusually diverse and lively culture. Beirut especially, has a lively art scene with many performances, exhibitions, fashion shows and concerts, helt in the ciy's galleries museums and theatres all year around. In one single day you can go skiing, go to the beach and go clubbing all night long.
