Before the Europeans arrived in Argentina, its north-western parts belonged to the Inca Empire, and the central parts to the Mapuches Empire. In 1516, the Spanish had established a colony in Buenos Aires and after a rebellion against Spain in 1810 the country was finally recognised as independent 8 July 1816.
After rough times with a military dictatorship and persecution of the opposition the country is today a democratic federal republic. Around the world, Argentina is known as the homeland of tango. For those who love food, what comes to mind is Argentinean meat.
The gay scene in Buenos Aires has near exploded after the democratization. Recently the capital has also recognised same-sex relationships.
