Salzburg is a city in the federal state of Salzburg in Austria, on the north side of the Alps. It is known for its baroque architecture, its history and for being the gateway to the Alps. The city centre, or the old town, is dominated by baroque towers and many churches. In 1965 Sound of Music was filmed here. The movie was based on the true story about Maria von Trapp, a nun from in Salzburg who looked after the aristocratic family and fled the German occupation. Famous coposer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in and grew up in Salzburg. The Salzburg festival is a world famous music festival that attracts visitors in July and August. Skiing is the main attraction in the winter. Salzburg has no slopes but us a gateway to ski resorts in the Austrian Alps. Energy drink manufacturer Red Bull has its main office outside of the city.
