Trier is a city in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It's situated in the Moselle valley near the border to Luxembourg. It's the oldest city in Germany and was founded by Roman emperor Augustus year 16 B.C. This is where the Roman times come alive, but also other eras have left their traces, such as Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. Event highlights are, among others, the wine and gourmet festival, the antique festival and the big Roman festival Brot und Spiele (German for Bread and circuses). Wine is connected as much with Trier as it was with the Romans and many respected vineyards have had their base here for generations.
