Perth is the largest city in the state of Western Australia. The city is situated by Swan River, which got it's name because of its black swans. When the gold rush began in the middle of the 1880s the population here quadrupled in a decennium. Perth is often described as the world's most remote mainland city. The climate is warm and dry, with a rainy winter period between May and August. The entertainment district is called Northbridge. Around Swan Valley there are several vineyards where you can sample some of Australia's wines.
