The fourth largest city in USA with 4.4 million people in the metropolitan area, is called Houston. It's known for its space industry with Johnson Space Center, from where the biggest space craft in the western world was launched.
The city is situated in an area that two entreprenoers from New York, John Kirby Allen and Augustus Chapman, bought in 1836 with the purpose to build a town. The name Houston comes from Sam Houston, a Texas general, who was also elected president in the USA on 1836.
As with many other areas in Texas, Houston is very hot in the summer. From May to September the average temperature is above 30 degrees, but in January and February the temperature is below 10 degrees.
Apart from space travel, the city is the centre for several big oil companies and is considered one of the most important cities in the world in relation to energy economy.
As a tourist you will naturally visit Space Center Houston, take a break in one of the city's 337 parks, or shop in the biggest shopping centre in Texas, called The Galleria.
