Skellefteå, or Skelepht as it was written in 1327, is probably derived from Samish. People have lived in this area for over 8000 years. The first timethe town was mentioned in writing was in the 14th century. The income of the city largely comes from forestry and hydroelectricity.
Skellefteå is the main city in Västerbotten County and is situated by river Skellefteälven, which runs from lake Ikesjaure (Iggesjávrre in Samish) in Arjeplog to the Bothnian Bay by Skellefte port.
