The capital of Södermanland County is beautifully situated by river Nyköpingsån and
Stadsfjärden. Considering the stunning scenery, it's no surprise that archaeological finds have been found here from 2000 B.C. In 1280 a Franciscan Friary was built here, but exactly when castle Nykopingshus was build is uncertain. However, it is known that Magnus III of Sweden was here and that Valdemar Birgersson died here in 1302. The dramatic story about the Feast of Nyköping, when Birger Jarl killed his brothers to gain access to the throne, indicates the importance this little city holds in Swedish history. Apart from beautiful scenery and a breath of history, Nyköping also has a lively gay rights organisation.
