Luleå is the capital of Norrbotten County and an episcopal see, as well as the county’s largest town. It was founded in 1621, in the district of Gammelstad, today an area protected as a world heritage. Luleå also has one of the biggest ports in Sweden. The cold winters may explain why Luleå has one of the world’s first indoor shopping centres. In the summer Luleå is known for its festival, Lulekalaset, and outdoor art project, ”Konst i det gröna”.
