In the landscape of Central Finland, the city of Jyväskylä is located by the shore of the lake Päijänne.
The city received market rights 1801 and city privileges March 22, 1837 by Tsar Nicholas 1. The year after, when Carl Ludvig Engel, made a first town plan 189 people lived in the city. The railway came to town 1897 and since then Jyväskylä has been an important hub for traffic.
