Båstad is mentioned in written documents for the first time in 1450 and received city rights in 1462. These were renewed in 1513 but the town diminished in importance and in 1664 received special privileges and in 1858 it became a borough. During the seven year Nordic war Båstad was pillaged and burnt in 1565 by a Swedish rogue corps under the leadership of Klas Horn. In August 1678, during the Scania War, Danish troupes, under the leadership of Johan Rantzau, surprised 140 drunk Swedish soldiers on Båstad square. During the battle 60 Swedes and two Danes were killed and 30 Swedes were taken captive. At the end of the 19th century the Skåne-Halland railroad was built between Helsingborg and Halmstad, with a station in Båstad. Båstad now began to experience a lively tourism in the summer, a development that has strengthened during the 20th century and now characterises the city.
