Ottawa is the capital of federal state Canada and the country’s fourth largest city. In Ontario it is the second largest city after Toronto. Ottawa is situated on the shore of Ottawa River, which forms the border to Quebec. The first people to live here, the Algonquin tribe, called the river Kichi Sibi or Kichissippi, which means The Big River. The Europeans arrived here around year 1800 and settled on the Quebec side. 31 December 1857 Queen Victoria declared the city capital of Canada. In the winter Ottawa is cold and has a lot of snow. The summers are damp and temperatures reach approximately 26-27 degrees in July.
