Prague is one of Europe’s central cities. A location for violent disputes of war and with a strong cultural development. The city was founded in the 9th century, where the kings and dukes of Bohemia kept court. However, remnants of inhabitation have been found from already 200 B.C. The city’s first great era was under king Charles IVs in the 14th century. A big part of what makes Prague’s central parts a world heritage originates from this time. The Charles Bridge is perhaps the most well known symbol that was built then.
Already in the 10th century the city began trading, a large Jewish population settled here and set a character on their own part of the city. When the Nazis took over Germany, Prague was a multi ethnic city where Czech, German and Yiddish speaking Jews lived side by side. Today, after the Holocaust, the Jewish quarters are more like a gigantic museum. The gay scene in Prague is lively and the city is liberal and positive towards gay tourism. However, the city has not yet arranged any Pride celebrations.
