The name Tallinn in Estonian means ”The Danish Fort”. But through history it has had many other names, such as Kesoniemi, Koluvan, Lindanisa, Lindanise, Lindanäs, Lindenäs, Revalia, Revel, Reveln and Räffle. In the old town Tallinn still has many buildings that remind of its history as a Danish, Swedish and later Russian city. The influence of Soviet times are thankfully not visible in the old town, but more in the suburbs built in the 50s, 60s and onwards. The old town is since 1997 protected by UNESCO and is listed as a world heritage. Hence, Tallinn is a city worth just walking around in. The gay scene is hectic, and with busy ferry traffic, many Finnish and Swedish people visit here.
