In German speaking Bern, which is the capital of Switzerland, you can experience a stunningly beautiful and unique area from the Middle Ages, which has put the city on the list of world heritages. Take a romantic walk through the old city centre, experience kilometres of lyrical baroque buildings with palaces and shopping arcades where the commerce is just as lively today as it was 500 years ago. In the summer dazzling flowers bloom in Bern’s old parts and around Christmas time it’s like a fairytale city. Bern was founded in 1191. The city was named after the first animal that was shot during a hunt – a bear. Hence, it has become the symbol of the city, on the coat of arms, license plates and tons of souvenirs. Bern is in the Emmentaler region, famous for its delicious cheeses. These, in combination with the local red wine are heavenly. In addition Bern has a really nice gay scene.
