Essen is the second largest city in the Ruhr Area in North Rhine-Westphalia, about 10 kilometres east of river Rhine. The city is known for its forges and steel construction. Essen was almost completely destroyed during World War II and after it was rebuilt and the wave of modernisation in the 50s there is now no architectual memorials left. One building that is a sight is the opera, designed my Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
