Indonesia consists of around 17 500 islands, of which the biggest are Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Borneo and New Guinea. The last two are only partly Indonesian. The capital of Jakarta is on Java. About 6 000 islands are inhabited. Colonial powers, coups corruption and gerilla wars has caused huge difficulties for the political development, but the country is a democracy. The islands are on trhe equator so the climate is tropical and hot. Bali is probably best known as a holiday paradise.
