Excavations indicate that people have lived in Mexico for 40 000 years. When the Europeans arrived here in 1519, the country was developed by powerful civilisations, such as the Olmecs, Mayas and Aztecs.
16 September 1810 the country declared its independence from Spain. As the 12th strongest economy in the world, and as a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA, as well as OECD, Mexico is today a powerful nation.
Formally, there is no official language but on a national level, Spanish is spoken. In addition, 62 regional languages have an official status.
The country has in its Constitution and federal laws legislated against discrimination based on sexual orientation and in several larger cities there is a lively gay scene. The states of Mexico City and Coahuila have brought in local legislation recognising same-sex couples.
