Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands. It's in the province of Zuid-Holland and the port, which has given the city its character, was one of the most frequently used until 2004. Then Shanghai took over on first place. Rotterdam is situated by river Nieuwe Maas.
City rights were given 7 June 1340 by Willem VI van Holland. The Netherlands had to surrender to Nazi Germany 14 May 1940 after Luftwaffe completely destroyed the central parts of Rotterdam. After the war the city was rebuilt and in the 80s they started to build with more daring architecture.
Rotterdam has a very active gay scene.
