Vaxholm, north of Stockholm, was for hundreds of years an important part in the capital’s defence against both the Danes and Russians. Vaxholm Castle and its museum gives a military historical picture if the area. If you travel here in the summer you will have a lovely boat trip through the inner archipelago. Vaxholm is considered to have received city rights by Queen Christina in 1647. This is the centre for a lot of the traffic in the archipelago and if you plan to travel further out you’re guaranteed to stop here.
