Before Sundsvall officially became a city by King Gustav II Adolf in 1621 it was a fishing village. It was the farm named Sund on its embankment that had to make space for the new city. Queen Christina decided that the city, after it grew faster than expected, should be moved and architect Nicodemus Tessin drew a for its time, very modern city. After the Russians invaded and burnt Tessin’s city there were only ruins left. In the19th century Sundsvall became a centre for the forestry industry and the city gave name to the big strike at the saw mills in 1879. The manufacturing of paper is still very important in the area. Looking at the region, this is the biggest area of employment in all of northern Sweden. Kai Gullmar, the mother of Swedish popular music, comes from Sundsvall. When The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights held its congress here in 2006 she was hailed as one of Sweden’s big lesbian role models. In 2007 Sundsvall Pride was held for the first time in connection with
Sundsvall’s Gatufest (street fair).
