Groningen, the biggest city in north Netherlands, was first mentionend in 1040. However, traces of humans have been found already from as far back as 3950-3720 B.C. In the 14th century this was an important centre for trade and the city's university was founded in 1614.
Groningen has an active gay life, with bars, restaurants and a number of gay sports clubs.
