The big country in the west where everything is bigger than at home! The country where so many emigrated to flee starvation and poverty. The country where the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York became the starting point for the gay movement, where the world's first openly gay politician, Harvey Milk, took office in the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. The country where the clone-gay was formed, lipstick lesbians became visible and the leather-gay was refined. The country we love to hate but never really can liberate ourselves from. The US has everything on offer to the LGBT traveller. Though homophobia is rampant in large parts of the country, there are equally large areas where you can openly live as gay without any hassle whatsoever. We're not likely to see gender neutral marriage legislation for a long while, but there are completely gay neighbourhoods, enormous Pride celebrations, gay holiday destinations, culture and insane shopping… You name it, the US has it.
