Amsterdam has 750 000 inhabitants in the city and 1.5 million including the suburbs. The city was founded in the 13th century and was then a fishing village by river Amstel. It received city rights about 100 years later. Thanks to its trade Amsterdam was the richest city in Europe in the 17th century. As a tourist you can walk around the city or rent a bicycle. It has a number of cosy cafés and bars along the canals. A visit to Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank’s house and the Van Gogh museum is standard. Also take a peek at the Homo monument before you head off to leather party street Warmoesstraat, or gay party street Reguliersdwarsstraat.
