On the furthermost tip of Florida Keys, in the far south of continental USA, the small island and town of Key West is located. It's a holiday paradise with its own international airport, a port for cruise ships and has a lot to offer gay tourists.
In Spanish the town is called Cayo Hueso, and had that name until the Brittish took over the area in 1763. At the shift of power, both the Spanish inhabitants and the Indians were moved to Cuba. The Brittish and the Spanish fought wars over Florida during a long time but nobody seemed to care much about Key West. It was mainly a fishing village.
Famous people connected to Key West are authors Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams.
The climate is mild and the town brags about never having experienced frost. Until now Key West has escaped big damage from hurricanes but when the hurricane season starts in the autumn, the whole area is sometimes evacuated.
Key West can also brag about that they in 1983-85 and 1987-89 had the first openly gay Mayor in the USA, Richard A. Heyman.
In addition to the Gay Fest celebrations, a Womens Fest for lesbian and bisexual women is held in September.
